Kaziranga National Park – Complete Safari Guide
Kaziranga National Park in Assam is unlike any other wildlife destination in India. There are no dry forests or rocky hills here. Instead, you find tall elephant grass, vast wetlands, and the mighty Brahmaputra river. And walking through this landscape is the Indian one-horned rhinoceros – a prehistoric-looking creature that Kaziranga is famous for protecting.
At Indian Travellers, located at Unit no. 237, Raghuleela Mall, Kandivali West, Mumbai, we organize Kaziranga National Park safari packages for wildlife lovers. This is a different kind of adventure. You will sit on an elephant’s back at dawn. You will drift through flooded grasslands. And you will see rhinos, elephants, and wild buffalo in numbers you cannot imagine.
In this blog, we will cover everything you need to know – the different ranges, elephant versus jeep safari, best time to visit, and how to reach Kaziranga from Mumbai.
Why Kaziranga is Special
Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most successful conservation stories in the world.
The rhinos: Kaziranga is home to more than 2,400 Indian one-horned rhinoceroses – about two-thirds of the world’s total population. You will see them everywhere – grazing in grasslands, bathing in waterholes, and walking across roads.
The landscape: The park is a mix of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense forests. The Brahmaputra river flows along its northern boundary, flooding parts of the park every monsoon.
The biodiversity: Kaziranga has the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world. It also has large populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, and over 500 bird species.
The unique experience: Nowhere else in India can you do an elephant safari at dawn. This is the signature Kaziranga experience.
Ranges of Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga is divided into four main ranges. Each range offers a different landscape and a different safari experience.
Central Range – Kohora
Kohora is the most popular and most visited range. It is the main tourist zone of Kaziranga.
Why choose Kohora: Highest density of rhinos. Best for first-time visitors. The interpretation centre and museum are located here.
Best for: Families and general wildlife viewing.
Safari types: Jeep safari and elephant safari both available.
Landscape: Mix of grasslands and wetlands.
Western Range – Bagori
Bagori is famous for its beautiful wetlands and bird life. The rhino sightings here are also excellent.
Why choose Bagori: Less crowded than Kohora. Better for bird watching. Beautiful sunset views over the wetlands.
Best for: Bird watchers and photographers.
Safari types: Jeep safari and elephant safari both available.
Landscape: Extensive wetlands and water bodies.
Eastern Range – Agoratoli
Agoratoli is the best range for bird watching and for seeing wild elephants. It is also the best for tiger sightings, though tigers are rarely seen anywhere in Kaziranga due to the tall grass.
Why choose Agoratoli: Highest chance of seeing wild elephants. Best for bird watching. Quietest range with fewest tourists.
Best for: Bird watchers and serious wildlife enthusiasts.
Safari types: Jeep safari only. Elephant safari not available.
Landscape: Dense forests and grasslands.
Burapahar Range – Ghorakati
Burapahar is the smallest and least visited range. It is located on hilly terrain, which is different from the rest of Kaziranga.
Why choose Burapahar: Peaceful and uncrowded. Hilly landscape. Good for primates like the hoolock gibbon.
Best for: Trekkers and those wanting solitude.
Safari types: Jeep safari only.
Landscape: Hilly forests.
Elephant Safari vs Jeep Safari in Kaziranga
Kaziranga offers two completely different safari experiences. Both are worth doing.
Elephant Safari
The elephant safari happens only at dawn – one hour in the morning. You sit on a trained elephant and go deep into the tall grass areas where jeeps cannot go.
Why choose elephant safari: You get incredibly close to rhinos. The rhinos are used to elephants and do not run away. For photography, this is unbeatable.
Timings: Only morning, typically 5:30 AM to 6:30 AM.
Duration: One hour.
Booking: Very limited seats (about 60 per day). Must be booked well in advance.
Best range: Kohora and Bagori.
Jeep Safari
The jeep safari covers more ground and allows you to see more of the park. You can cover multiple habitats and have a better chance of seeing birds and elephants.
Why choose jeep safari: More flexibility. Longer duration. Can cover more areas.
Timings: Morning (7:30 AM to 10:00 AM) and afternoon (1:30 PM to 3:00 PM).
Duration: 2 to 3 hours.
Booking: Easier than elephant safari. More seats available.
Best range: All ranges.
Best Time to Visit Kaziranga
The best time for a Kaziranga National Park safari is different from other parks.
November to February: Pleasant weather. Grass is tall after monsoon, making animal spotting harder but bird watching excellent. This is the peak tourist season.
March to April: Grass is cut by the forest department. Animal visibility improves dramatically. Rhinos and elephants are easier to spot. This is the best time for wildlife viewing.
May to October: Monsoon season. The Brahmaputra river floods large parts of the park. Most ranges remain closed. Only the Burapahar range on higher ground remains partially open.
May to June for tigers: If you are specifically looking for tigers, April and May are best. The grass is shortest. Tigers occasionally come out on the roads.
